De Fûgelpits in Anjum is a bird-shelter, which was built in Ezumazijl, near to Anjum. Sikke and Fetje Viseser started (1978) with the sheltering, nursing and cleaning of wounded and wild birds. In 1989 the shelter moved from Azumazijl to Anjum. Then Sape and Gaatske Wiersma-Visser took over their jobs, and they starting to be the force behind the scenes. In the past few years, they have succesfully treated over 1500 birds per year, and made them fly out after the cleanse. More than half of these birds are victim of oil-polution. The birds are being brought in fromout whole "North-Frysland", a part of Groningen, and the whole North Coasts, the islands included.

Goal Fugelpits:

The original goal of the fugelpits is : Treat, Nurse and clean sick and wounded wild birds, and make them return to wildlife as soon as possible. All the volunteers work with this goal in their heads, and they go for it! The nursing and treating of the birds, is a good 'meter' for nature. You can see how the birds are doing in general. They are checking every bird for different diseases, and if a epidemy goes around, they will make notice, and the other birdcare centers will be notified. We have also found out that the bird-shelter is a perfect way to make people more aware of the wildlife, and the disasters, and of course the results of a disaster. The ethical side of the sheltering of bird is getting a bigger and more important topic in the polics.

Region:

In the Friesland province, the fugelpits has become a very famous place. If you name it, they know what you are talking about. The shelter is cooperating with the "fugelhelling". The fugelpits differs in the fact that they actually nurse the birds here for a long time, while the fugelhelling only cleans the birds.

National:

De fugelpits is the only coast-shelter in Friesland, and Groning with the qualification "K. I." which stands for a certified authority for bird-sheltering. When the birds reach shore, the first place they will go to, is the fugelpits. In the netherlands there are only five qualified "K.I." bird-centers. Because of the loads of oil in the sea nowadays, they have the most experience, and they treat the most birds, compared to the other birdcenters.

International:

The fugelpits is well known, even on a international level. In the past requests came from Spain, Germany, France, and Belgium, to aid in their quest to clean, nurse, and treat the birds on location. There is a good contact with Professor Dr. Neumann, who is situated in the university of Munster (Germany), and birdcenter from all over Europe. We even get requests to accept volunteers, who want to work and help at the fugelpits, from all over europe.
