Brick floor for the Fûgelpits

thursday 02 februari 2006, Moddergat

De fugelpits in Moddergat is upgrading their working space with a brick floor. This will result in a better working envirment for more birds, and more personnel. The brick floor has been made possible thanks to a donation of 46,000 euro, which has been made by the "Wilhelmina Davut-Keuchenius" foundation, situated in Apeldoorn. The foundation has specialized itself in investment in both wildlife, and animal-protection.

Fugelpits aids in cleaning spanish birds.

Gaatske Wiersma (the initiator of the fugelpits) is going to help cleaning the with oil polluted birds, in the spanish La Coruna.

These birds have been the victim of a disaster with a oil-tanker, the prestige. The tanker sank into the sea, and the oil flowed freely. Ten thousands tons of oil has been released into the seawater.

At the moment the international organisation Sea-alarm is checking up on the 'status' of the situation. The fugelpits has been asked to travel all the way to spain in order to help these birds, and let them live again.

Gaatske Wiersma thinks her help is being requested because of the experience she has got with this particular kind of work. "We treat dozens of birds throughout the whole year, and after all these years we have got a lot of knowledge about how to treat the birds. We have even got special machines, to clean the birds". When disasters occur, for example the oiltanker in spain, people are on a crossroad, and they don't know how to solve it. Of course we offered our help, and travelled to Spain.

THe cleaning of birds is the only thing that the fugelpits does, nowadays. Due to lack of working space, and lack of funds, the fugelpits actually decided only to treat the critical birds, and leave the 'sheltering' to other foundations.

This is of course not the first time that Wiersma is requested when disasters occur. "In 1996 I've traveled to Wales, the case of an sunken oil-tanker". "In 1998 I helped in Germany. Also another burned and sunken ship was the reason."

On the Northsea there are still thousand of poluted birds

3rd february, 2003

On the northsea there are still thousands of poluted birds. That's the 'best' guess that the fugelpits can make at this point. The birds are just not "hitting the beach" for the simple reason that the wind direction is offshore.

The frisian birdcentre has treated 180 birds the last few days. At birdcenter "De Mikke" in Middelburg, they have been treating 500 animals in the last few days. The birds have probably been poluted with oil, from the transport-ship "Tricolor", that sunk in the canal of calais, and from the Assi Euro Link, which sank due north of the Wad-islands.
